Coco Sumner, born Eliot Pauline, does not need any help from her father, Sting, when it comes to music. Although the good genes definetely helped, it is easy to get lost in the young singer’s androgynous, gruff yet smooth voice, moreover be absorbed by her good looks. Making music under the name I Blame Coco, she has also modeled for Burberry and done her fair share of acting. Screenshots from Caesar (musicvideo below) look like an editorial shoot and the collaboration with swedish queen of pop, Robyn leaves the song with one extra punch of yum. All in all, I predict things will go extremely well for Coco in 2010. Might I add, she’s up there with Alexa Chung in my books (which is the highest of highs).

These delicate, dangly precious things came as a result of a bowl cut leaving Tamara Bavdek feeling a little on the boyish side. Back in the big 08′, after having cut off her long locks, she was on the search for something feminine and girly. Looking to muses such as Edie Sedgewick, Bavdek abruptedly decided that “big-sculpture-like earrings” were exactly what she needed. Warhol’s favorite lady wore this one pair, which appeared to be made of fabric. This aesthetic appealed to Bavdek, who admits jokingly, that beforehand she ”never liked lace”. She went on to explain that she is a “modernist at heart who doesn’t like things when they are too ornamental”. The discovery occured when she began taking the lace apart. Because of how lightweight lace is, she could make earrings of any size, without having the problem of earlobes hanging down to her shoulders. Tamara adds that lace is ”to textiles what gold is to metals and diamonds to rocks in terms of value and aesthetics”. When I asked the pretty girl behind THIS ILK how she goes about creating new pieces, she answered: “I use the way of thinking I learned in school (Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design). I like to create pieces that are beautiful but also functional and as “outside the box” as possible. I see my pieces as an object to be worn much more than jewelry, clothing or accessories which helps me create more extravagant things”. She also hinted at more multifunctional pieces to come, which happen to be my favorite (as seen in photo #2). CONTEST- When paying this designer a visit in her quaint apartment (and also greeted by her cuddly cat), she showed me most of her pieces she had prepared for a sale later that day. Then came the GOLDZMINE and THIS ILK collaboration, and together we chose pieces for a shoot. Lucky for you, Tamara is giving readers a chance to win a pair of Seagrass earrings from the Octopussy collection. whenever its time to purchase that new read and head in to the book store, the only place i really know where to start is the magazines. i usually end up with a pile stacked above my head- find myself a cozy corner, begin flipping through them and purchase my faves. but now, im talking ‘real reads’. all ive got to tell a good read from a not-so-good read is by friends recommendations. the other day i asked some amigos what they had picked up recently (mixed in with some of my favorites) so i thought i would share, in case you are cluelessly poking through the bookshelves as well. first of let me clarify that any books from palahniuk or vonnegut are fantastic.

syn·es·the·sia syn·aes·the·sia (sĭn’ĭs-thē’zhə)
n.
A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a color.
A sensation felt in one part of the body as a result of stimulus applied to another, as in referred pain.
The description of one kind of sense impression by using words that normally describe another.
i find this condition to be so peculiar and interesting and the video depicts it incredibly well with striking colors. i think i might enjoying having it for just a day or two. here is an excerpt from someone who experiences synesthesia.
“I am synaesthetic myself, which means the sensory receptors in my brain are cross-wired so that I feel sounds, smell tastes and hear sensations etc. Many people experience this to some minor degree (you feel that Wednesdays are purple, for example) but I’m a medically-certified sufferer. It was most extreme when I was a kid, and it allowed me more than a few secret pleasures. Listening to ABC’s “The Look of Love” generated a powerful sensation of chocolate in my mouth, while eating actual chocolate altered my vision in much the same way as LSD. If I ran my hand over the cat, I’d hear birdsong. It was fun experimenting. The best experience of those times was my brief relationship with Deborah de Angelo. The phonetics of her name brought whisky to my tongue; her blonde hair made me hear cellos; her green cardigan caused a raging boner, and the sensation of her busy mouth upon my swollen helmet made me taste a full English breakfast. Those day are over. With medication, my only pleasure these days is retiring to bed with a cowbell, mint humbugs and Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart” – all of which in combination, conspire to bring about the sensation of a hamster up my anus.”

Disco Ruido – Mrs. Love (mp3)
a preview of yet another collaboration between jeremy scott and adidas. this is just mens apparel- but i wouldnt hesitate to wear ..practically all of it. can someone say: silver-boat-shoes. more or less fit for riding a spaceship, however theres no doubt that scott never fails to dissapoint. the fringe, metallics and wings have been carried on from the last collection yet it remains a breath of fresh air with splashes of color. looking like you had to rush from band practice or sports practice, while on lsd, to sprinting down a runway–is what i call a good look. the marching band hoodie is to die for !!! actually scratch that, all of the hoodies/zips are to die for !!! to preview the collection click here.

through njal (not just a label) i discovered a montreal designer by the name of melinda santillan. her tshirt line, entitled ADIEU, features her moody watercolor grayscale drawings. i happen to think they are really lovely and so does urban outfitters, elle uk and various others who are buzzing about these tees. on the mexican-canadian artist’s blog you can find a shoot, entitled ‘ghost in my room‘, which she directed and deems her inspiration, which is very evident. as much as i have a stupid fear of ghosts (dont make fun of me !!!), i am far too friendly with adieu tshirts. courtesy of santillan, she has hooked up goldzmine with a giveaway just in time for christmas- for both boys and girls- and if you care to enter, email goldzmine@hotmail.com with your name and address. ends january 3rd and good luck ! pictures are courtesy of erica pucci.
